No one loves summer more than we do, and no one knows the trouble it can bring more than we do, too. Unfortunately, we see the hazards of summer every day. Our experience has taught us to be vigilant and proactive in ensuring the safety and well-being of our loved ones during this time of year.
That's why we're sticklers for safety and why we put together this summer home checklist for you. Because the best summer at home is the one where you are safe and happy!
1. Change your home air filter in your HVAC system. If it’s a particularly hot summer, you may have to do this more than once. Cleaner air means a healthier home.
2. Dust off ceiling fans and set them up to rotate counterclockwise, which will keep the warm air up toward the ceiling and cooler air where you are.
3. Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to make sure they are working properly.
4. By cleaning off your refrigerator coils you can save on energy costs.
5. Lubricate garage door motor and chain and ensure the auto-reverse function is working properly.
6. Inspect your deck for cracked and rotting wood because nobody likes a splinter. If it’s sealed or stained then refinish annually.
7. Walk around your property and check for any hornets’ nests or termite damage.
8. Look for cracks in your walkways and driveway. Fix them before serious resurfacing is needed in the future.
9. Explore your yard for holes that could cause a twisted ankle or be housing an animal.
10. Inspect your trees for signs of decay and trim branches to keep them away from your house and surrounding power lines.
