Welcome to Pennsylvania! We are excited you are moving here. You’re going to love it.
Here's what you need to know about obtaining your PA drivers license and auto insurance.
All new residents with out-of-state non-commercial driver's licenses must obtain a PA Driver's License within 60 days of establishing Pennsylvania residency.
Residency is typically established when you do one of the following:
- Take a job,
- Sign a lease,
- Buy a home, or
- Enroll children in school
To obtain an Pennsylvania driver’s license you need to do the following:
Step 1. Visit a Driver's License Center in person. You can find a location here.
Step 2. Bring your old driver's license, social security card and 2 proofs of residency. Find out what qualifies here.
Step 3. You will need to take a vision-screening test and complete Form DL-180R. You will also need to pay any required fees.
Step 4: Obtain auto insurance by a company who is licensed to do business in Pennsylvania.
Pennsylvania law requires that you have the following MINIMUM insurance coverage for all registered vehicles:
- $15,000 for bodily injury or death of one person
AND - $30,000 for bodily injury or death of two or more people
AND - $5,000 for property damage.
As insurance advisors, we believe that state minimums are way too low. If you become a client of Blue Marsh Insurance, we will ensure that you are actually protected. State minimums don’t cover it. If you register your vehicle in PA but do not cover the vehicle with the proper policy, you will face huge consequences including suspension of your registration and paying fines.
DON’T LET THIS HAPPEN TO YOU! Get the proper PA insurance before you register your vehicle (and let us help you do it!).
Step 5: Title your vehicle in Pennsylvania.
Before you can register your vehicle and obtain license plates in PA, you need to transfer your out-of-state title to PA. Here's how to do it.
Step 6: Register your vehicle and acquire license plates.
We know that getting your ducks in a row during a big move can be confusing and overwhelming. We’d love to help you take home insurance, renters insurance, auto insurance (or any other coverage you might need) off of your plate.
