When I tell people that I work in insurance, I see a lot of surprised faces and sometimes I even get a negative reaction. I realize that this happens because to most people, insurance is confusing, overwhelming, and a hassle to deal with. In reality, dealing with your insurance doesn't have to be a horrible experience. The way to avoid the drama is to choose a good agent.
Like choosing a doctor or a dentist or an accountant, choosing a good insurance agent is extremely important because their job is to protect the important things in your life and to be there for you in some of your worst moments. Agents should be there to make your life easier and make your insurance experience a breeze. Wondering how to find your perfect agent? Here’s what to look for!
- Look for an agent that is honest and focused on your needs. A good agent will take the time to get to know you and your life in order to provide you with the best coverage possible. While they should be mindful of your budget, they won't eliminate coverage just to make sure you get the cheapest insurance possible. They will walk you through exactly what coverages you're purchasing so that you know that everything important in your life is being protected. For example, your agent should be asking if you have any valuable pieces of jewelry, art, or other collectible items to make sure that they are listed and covered under your homeowners policy. Additionally, a good agent is transparent and won't push coverages onto you that you don't need. For example, if you are retired, a good agent would make sure that you don't have job income loss coverage on your auto policy since it is unnecessary now that you are no longer working.
- Look for an agent who will be there to support you and be your advocate. Whether you're having a problem with a bill for your premium or facing damage from a claim, a good agent will have your back. Your agent is the middleman between you and the insurance company, so they should be willing to go up to bat for you when you run into a problem. A good agent will respond quickly and efficiently when you come to them with an issue and they should try to take as much of the burden off of you as possible. For example, if you submit a claim and don't hear from your insurance company's claims adjuster within a reasonable amount of time, your agent should be calling the company to ensure that an adjuster reaches out to you as soon as possible. While not all problems are easily solved, a good agent will do everything they can to help you.
From my experience, those are the most important qualities in a good agent, but in the end, it all comes down to finding an agent that you trust. If you have the right person on your side, you can eliminate all the worry and hassle and have peace of mind knowing that you are protected.
